Julie's Story |
|
Julie was 15 years old and walking with her friends towards their neighborhood. Some of her friends were headed in a different direction, and Julie began walking with her friend's cousin who was headed the same way. They were talking when he suddenly pushed her against a wall and pulled at her clothing. Julie fought back, but her attacker hit her with a pipe. He hit her in the stomach and lower areas. Julie screamed loudly as her attacker yelled at her and began to rape her. A few men came running towards them and her attacker went running. The police were called. However, Julie found out that her attacker's father was on the police force and that he might get away with what he had done. Julie pressed charges, but the evidence had been tampered with and her attacker was exonerated.
Julie was tested for STDs, and for pregnancy and thankfully, both turned out negative. If emergency contraception had been available, Julie would have taken it. She shared her story because she wants to other survivors and young women to know that if they get assistance, they can live a normal life and be in meaningful relationships.
Julie is now a teacher and volunteers at a local rape crisis center. She is also getting married later this year.
